Deep pomegranate red against ivory in inch-wide bands. The red is dusty rather than bright — there is brown underneath it — and fine vertical striations create tonal movement through each red band. The Source
Sometime between 1857 and 1860, Mrs. James Bonner Collins wore a silk evening dress to a White House reception for President James Buchanan.
Set into the pleats of its enormous skirt were lengths of plain striped silk. The Metropolitan Museum of Art singles them out in its record of the dress, noting that the vertical stripes helped lift and elongate the silhouette.
They were not the showiest part of the gown. They are the reason this pattern exists.
