Before You Begin

Inspect every panel
Unroll and inspect each panel before cutting. Check the pattern, scale, panel size, and color match across panels, and make sure the printed surface is free of defects. If you see any issue, contact connect@vintagebotanica.com before starting your project. All retail orders are covered by our 60-day Satisfaction Guarantee.

Order a sample first
A sample lets you test adhesion and removal on your own wall surface before committing to a full installation.

Room conditions
Let the material acclimate in a clean, dry room at 70 to 75°F (21 to 24°C) and 40 to 55% relative humidity before installing.

Handle with care
Do not crease the printed face before or during installation. Creases may not come out.

Paint and primer
Eggshell, satin, and semi-gloss finishes work best. Do not install over washable or scrubbable paints. Newly painted walls need at least 30 days to dry before installation.

Supplies

  • Pencil and measuring tape
  • Level and straightedge, such as a metal ruler
  • Sharp snap-off utility knife with spare blades
  • Scissors
  • Felt-edged plastic squeegee or smoothing tool
  • Ladder
  • Clean work surface or table

Preparing the Wall

Step 1: Smooth the wall
Confirm you have enough material and that every surface is smooth, sound, and undamaged. Fill holes, cracks, and nicks, then sand smooth. On new walls, drywall joints should be taped, mudded, and sanded smooth. Remove any old wallcovering and its residue.

Step 2: Clean the wall
Remove dust, dirt, grease, and stains with a damp microfiber cloth or sponge and a mix of warm water and vinegar. Walls must be free of mold and mildew. Let the wall dry completely, to a moisture content below 4%.

Step 3: Check the surface
Avoid porous or textured surfaces such as cement block, orange peel, knockdown, or popcorn texture. Lightly sand high-gloss finishes and wipe clean to improve adhesion.

Step 4: Prime the wall
Primer is recommended to promote adhesion and is required on bare drywall, patched areas, and walls painted with no-VOC paint. Use a high-quality primer, such as Roman Pro-977 Ultra Prime, and allow 48 to 72 hours to dry, or follow the primer manufacturer's directions.

Planning the Installation

  • Turn off power to switches and outlets, then remove the cover plates.
  • Start in a discreet spot, such as a corner or behind a door, to help hide seams.
  • Use a level and straightedge to draw a light vertical guideline for the first panel.
  • Measure the wall height, add 4 in., and cut the first panel to that length.

Hanging

  1. Starting at the top-left corner of the panel, peel back about 6 in. of the backing liner.
  2. Line up the panel's right edge with your guideline, leaving about 2 in. above the wall for trimming, and press the adhesive gently onto the wall.
  3. Smooth from the center outward with the squeegee, working in small 4 to 6 in. sections.
  4. Keeping the panel flat to the wall, continue peeling the liner downward in small sections, smoothing as you go. Use gentle, even pressure to avoid stretching. To reposition, slowly peel the panel back and reapply.
  5. Cut the next panel and overlap the previous one by 0.75 in., matching the pattern from top to bottom. Continue across the wall from left to right.
  6. Press each panel into the ceiling and baseboard lines with the smoothing tool.
  7. Trim the excess at the ceiling and baseboard with a sharp utility knife, changing blades often. Press cut edges flat.
  8. Around windows, doors, and outlets, make diagonal relief cuts, then trim.

Removal

Peel slowly, pulling the panel back along the wall at a 180° angle. Removal after long periods or in dry conditions may require wall touch-ups.
