This pattern has been commissioned twice — once in early 18th century France, and once again two centuries later, copied exactly, and again in silk, because whoever ordered it thought the original design was still worth getting right.
That second copy passed through French & Co in New York, the firm whose invoices are held in the archives of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and from there to Amsterdam, where the Rijksmuseum purchased it in 1978. Accession BK-1998-17.
